REVIEW – The Meatloaf Bakery Cookbook

We'd love it if you shared it!

I make a mean meatloaf, if I do say so myself. Actually, my oldest son and husband say so. I’m always interested in trying variations on meatloaf, which is why I was interested in a new cookbook called The Meatloaf Bakery.

ABOUT THE MEATLOAF BAKERY COOKBOOK

Nothing says Mom’s cooking like meatloaf. Now Cynthia Kallile, heroine of all things comfort food, and owner of The Meatloaf Bakery, Chicago’s crowd-pleasing, foodie hotspot (featured on The Today Show, NPR, and The New York Times), updates everyone’s favorite dinnertime staple, in The Meatloaf Bakery Cookbook: Comfort Food with a Twist (F+W Media, November 2012).

It’s goodbye red velvet and hello meatloaf “cupcakes”! Cynthia on her unique creations:

“Meatloaf is a classic All-American dish. It’s the perfect comfort food and often brings back memories of Mom’s cooking. Making and decorating meatloaf our way every day is unbelievably fun and rewarding. Now you can make the same savory treats in your own kitchen, and add your own finishing touches. With these recipes I hope to bring a smile to your face and joy to your tummy. Just like the comfort food you remember.”

The Meatloaf Bakery Cookbook: Comfort Food with a Twist hits shelves on November 18th, just in time for those cozy, holiday get-togethers, and offers a variety of dishes for meat lovers and vegetarians alike, such as:

  • Herby Turkey Loaf for Thanksgiving —Loaded with flavor, texture, and nutrition, serve with a side of fresh cranberry sauce, and this favorite will soon become a staple on your plate.
  • Sassy Turkey Sausage —This zippy blend of turkey, spicy turkey sausage, and fragrant herbs and spices raises turkey to a new level.
  • The Mother Loaf® —This is where it all started—Cynthia’s mom’s “recipe,” — she created this version from memory, and it’s so good, it was featured on Food Network’s “Sugar High.”
  • The Father Loaf —If you’re going to have The Mother Loaf, you’ve got to have The Father Loaf. Add some barbecue sauce, and top with Cheesy Taters. Here’s to dads everywhere.
  • “No Buns About It Burger Loaf®”—What’s a meatloaf cookbook without a meatloaf that tastes just like an All-American, bacon-cheddar, cheeseburger?
  • The Falafel-ly Good Loaf— For those vegetarians at your Thanksgiving table, or holiday table!

You can join the conversation on twitter (#MeatloafBakeryBook), and if you are in the Chicago area track down the Meatloaf-A-Go-Go® food truck to get your meatloaf fix.

MY THOUGHTS

I received a copy of The Meatloaf Bakery Cookbook.

Chapters include:

  • The Meatloaf Bakery Story
  • Ingredients Make The Loaf
  • Tools And Techniques Make The Loaf
  • A Day In the Life Of The Meatloaf Bakery
  • Meatloaf Classics
  • With A Twist
  • Meatless Loaves
  • Seasonal Specialties
  • Little Bites
  • Something On The Side
  • Sassy Sauces

The recipes are all easy to understand. For the most part the recipes call for ordinary ingredients that are in most grocery stores, although I did see a couple of things I’d not heard of before. There are lots of pictures in the book. Prep and cooking time are missing unfortunately, something I often find helpful in determining what recipe I’m going to make. Recipes that especially intrigued me include the Herby Turkey Loaf, A Loaf In Every Pot Pie, Mac N Barb Loaf, Loaf-A-Roma, Chili Chili Bang Bang, BBQ Picnic Loaf, and Loafies, among others. This cookbook would be great for anyone that likes meatloaf and would like to learn different ways to make it.

I pre-ordered The Meatloaf Bakery and got it a couple of weeks ago. I'm a big fan of this place in Chicago. I've already tried my two favs from the store -- Wing and a Prayer (which is chicken) and Omega 3 (salmon). Boy, they tasted just like the store, including the incredible wasabi mashed potatoes you put on top of the Omega version. I bought 10 more copies to give to friends for Christmas.

I like this! There are so many various ways to make meatloaf and I think everyone has a different way. I'd love to learn some of the various recipes to test out that others love as well. Meatloaf cupcakes? Wow, that that's a new one for sure...lol
