I have always believed that education can be fun, and that kids learn more when they are having fun. When a student has an interest in the material he or she is more likely to pay attention and interact, as well as do the necessary work to find the answers. The best form of education is he kind where the student doesn’t even realize they’re getting an education. Enter Safari Tales, an app rated number 1 in 11 countries and the winner of Best Mobile App Awards: Winner of 2015 Summer Awards – Best App for Children and Toddlers.

Safari Tales follows in the fossilised footsteps of the award-winning Dino Tales and opens up a world of exploration, learning and story-telling across the African savanna. Seen through the eyes of five cute baby animals, Safari Tales sets young safari adventurers free to explore a fertile African world. There is a multitude of games to play, fossils to be found, and stickers to be collected. Discover thousands of facts by asking our wise, talking meerkat, Darwin, all your questions about safari animals.

To play your child will need to wake five baby animals.

Once an animal is awakened, it will also be their responsibility to play with and nurture the animals. During gameplay your child will discover thousands of facts about safari animals. They’ll also be strengthening their vocabulary and language skills. They might even learn a couple of words in Swahili!

To find the animal your child will explore the land, which is full of caves, forests, rivers and more. All of the images and graphics are very colorful. Even the names, like Mud Wallows, Sunset Savanna, Catapult Canyon, are fun! While exploring these amazing places your child will also have the opportunity to play fun “mini-style” games, such as make music in the musical forest.

Throughout the game you will be able to collect things and receive rewards. Your sticker book will fill up quickly with stickers, minerals, fossils and more.

As I mentioned earlier, your child has responsibilities, such as taking care of their animal. If your child makes a mistake they are encouraged to find out information that will help them get the correct answer. I really appreciate this, it’s a positive way to help a child find the right answer.

The prompts encourage skills like thinking, reading, and comprehension. And, when your child asks Darwin the talking meerkat questions by spinning the wordwheels, they’ll practice skills and learn some more information.

Here’s a trailer for the app.

Safari Tales is more than just a simple game. The app also lets your child express their creativity by creating a storybook of their own. The app captures the information from each session the child has played and combines it all into a colorful storybook and animal encyclopedia. Your child’s storybook can even be shared with others. This really encourages storytelling skills, which will be useful in school. Plus it encourages the use of creativity and imagination.

The game does have parental controls built in. To access the controls there is an icon up at the top called the Parent Corner. As a parent you will want to go here before your child first plays. Here you can customize settings to make gameplay most enjoyable and appropriate for your child. You can set the reading age and limit play time. If you are comfortable doing so you can also establish a pin that will prevent your child from going on and playing the app without your permission. You can even set the app up so that you receive an email notifying you when your child has created a new tale, so that you can read it together. This is also where you find help and advice about the best way to play with your child.

I think this is a great app. It provides your child with a great way to have safe and appropriate entertainment, learn about an interesting topic, and show creativity in designing their storybook.
