My Mom used to dress my two youngest brothers in matching outfits. They were 13 months apart and she called them her Irish twins. I thought matching outfits were obnoxious and she thought they were cute. And truth be told, she wasn’t entirely wrong. The whole matching outfit thing can be cute. At times. Once in a while. For young children. Not for older kids.
Over the years I have seen some mothers try to match their child. It doesn’t generally work. Either the child is dressed too old or the mother is dressed too young. Many people don’t realize that coordinating is often a better and more stylish look than matching. Enter SemSem.
SemSem is a line of clothing designed to let mothers and daughters coordinate their clothing without coming off like a pair of twin infant girls in any cliche photo opportunity. SemSem visionary Abeer Al Otaiba created the line to honor the timeless bond between a mother and daughter. Wanting to create special clothing that was both high-quality and functional, she drew on the influence of time spent in resort areas in the Mediterranean, Emirates and France as a young woman. The result is clothing with a timeless look that is both casual and elegant.
SemSem pieces look great together because they share a common thread. Sometimes that thread is literally a thread, other times it may be an accent or a color. They also look great there is close attention to detail, which can be seen in areas such as the beading and hand-stitched 3-D embroidery. The style displays a blend of Egyptian, Emirati, and French influences. Garments are hand-made New York City from the finest materials, including Italian silks and French corded lace.
Chic fashion items such as these won;t be found in a $10 store open to the masses. This is a higher end line of special clothing. As such you should not be surprised to know that the clothing line has a purpose. The brand seems to remind and reinforce a mother teaching her daughter to have timeless style and grace. It also should reinforce the message we give to our children that we should be grateful for what we have and what we can buy, as there are many in the world that cannot.
The brand itself also seeks to make a difference. SemSem supports a different women’s charity each year with the proceeds from its sales. The charities and foundations the benefit support health, literacy and education for women and girls around the globe.
