Black Box Wines

Do you enjoy a glass of wine with your meal? Or perhaps at the end of the day, when you can just relax? Or maybe for a celebration, or even a romantic evening? I do enjoy a glass of wine from time to time. But, from time to time is not usually frequent enough that I’ll finish an entire bottle. Inevitably, in my house, we open a bottle of wine and have some and then put the remainder in the fridge, where it sits. Sometimes we can’t get it shut, so it doesn’t even taste that great when we do have it again, at which point we dump it down the sink. Enter Black Box Wines.

I was unfamiliar with Black Box Wines prior to receiving these samples. It turns out that Black Box Wines, started in 2002, was the first premium 3L box wine in the US. The wines are vintage dated and appellated from premier growing regions around the world. Their wines have won awards, recognized by critics with 40 Gold Medals and 27 “Best Buys” from Wine Enthusiast.

Black Box Wines are boxed, premium wines that will stay fresh for up to 30 days after you open them. The boxes are simple and elegant looking. The boxes have little screw on caps to help ensure freshness. Each 3L box of wine holds the equivalent of four bottles of wine and has a price of about $25, which is the equivalent to a $6.25 bottle of wine. There are nine varieties of wine that can be found in a 3L box:

  • Valle Central Chile Cabernet Sauvignon
  • California Merlot
  • Mendoza Argentina Malbec
  • California Central Coast Shiraz
  • Red Blend
  • California Chardonnay
  • Valle Central Chile Sauvignon Blanc
  • California Pinot Grigio
  • California Riesling

Not long ago Black Box added a smaller, 500 mL size box called a Tetra pack that retails for about $5. These boxes are the equivalent of about three glasses of wine, making them perfect for someone who only has an occasional glass, or only needs a little for guests. It would also be the perfect size for those who cook with wine, it’s just big enough to have enough too cook with and have some to drink. This size is available in five varieties:

  • Moscato
  • Chardonnay
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Merlot
  • Pinot Grigio

I received samples of three Black Box Wines – Moscato, California Merlot and Valle Central Chile Sauvignon Blanc. Of the three, the Moscato was definitely my favorite, it was sweet and fruity, and not too dry. The Moscato pairs well with both foods and desserts. My second favorite was the Valle Central Chile Sauvignon Blanc, which pairs well with white meats, seafood and salad. My third favorite was the California Merlot, which pairs well with red meats and flavorful dishes such as pasta with meat sauce.

Here’s a quick and easy recipe for Creamy Chicken With Bacon And Cheese that paired perfectly with the Moscato.
