  • 2 disposable piping bags
  • whisk

  • 2 2/3 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 large egg (room temp)
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • red and blue gel food coloring

Vanilla Glaze Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • red and blue gel food coloring
  • 1/2 cup patriotic sprinkles (for decorating)

Donut Instructions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Spray the donut pan with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

Place the flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, salt and sugar into a large bowl and whisk together.

Place the milk, sour cream , and eggs into a second bowl and whisk together.

Whisk in the melted butter, vegetable oil, and vanilla.

Gradually whisk the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until combined.

Divide the batter into three bowls.

Add several drops of green food coloring in the first bowl.

Stir to mix the red color evenly in the batter.

In the second bowl add several drops of purple food coloring.

Stir to mix the blue color evenly in the batter.

Spoon equal amounts of the 3 batters into the donut pan.

Bake at 400 degrees for 9 minutes or until the donuts spring back.

Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for a few minutes.

Transfer the donuts to a wire rack to cool off completely.

Glaze Instructions

Whisk the milk, powdered sugar and vanilla extract together until smooth.

Spoon about 1/8 cup of icing into two bowls.

Add a few drops of red food coloring into one bowl and blue food coloring into the second bowl.

Mix each bowl until it is combined.

Spoon each color into its own piping bag.

Cut the tip off of the piping bags.

Drizzle the colors into the white icing twice going vertically and horizontally.

Dip a donut into the icing and turn 90 degrees.

Place the donut onto the wire rack and repeat the previous steps for remaining donuts.

Sprinkle some red, white and blue sprinkles onto the donuts.

Let dry for an hour before serving.

      Now these donuts would be fun to serve on Memorial Day and the 4th of July. Everyone will love the red, white, and blue colors. Great way to start out the day.
