Official Synopsis

In this contemporary remake, BEACHES follows the serendipitous meeting of two young girls on the Venice Beach Boardwalk who, though worlds apart in lifestyle, embark on an unexpected and lifelong friendship. CC (Idina Menzel) is an aspiring singer trying to make it in Los Angles when she is discovered by a director who gives her her first big shot. Hillary (Nia Long), the daughter of a prominent civil rights lawyer, is struggling to find her own destiny. Their friendship–even with its ups and downs–sustains them for decades. Gabriella Pizzola, Grace Capeless, Jodi Capeless, Sanai Victoria, and Antonio Cupacostar.

As I See It:

Meeting by chance in Venice Beach, CC Bloom and Hillary begin a third year friendship. Both overcome obstacles–CC poverty; Hillary, an overbearing, controlling father. Both achieve success–CC, a famous singer; Hillary, a top lawyer.

My Opinion Only:Lifetime Network’s BEACHES is a contemporary remake of the 1988 Garry Marshall classic of the same name. Why compare the original big screen feature to this television to remake? They are different–changing audiences, budgets, music all impact what one sees as well and, therefore, likes or dislikes. Simple fact, simply stated I enjoyed BEACHES. It is a lot more than a typical chick flick.

Grammy winner Idina Menzel succeeds in her role of CC Bloom. Her portrayal of a strong woman works artistically. My only regret is that editing her versions “Wind Beneath My Wings,” “The Glory of Love,” “Last Time,” and “I’ll Stand By You” denies listeners the full beauty of her voice.

One time Outstanding Black Reels Best Actress Nia Long displays true acting chops. She is a true co-star rather than just a supporting character. Her Hillary is a strong women–no stereotype.

I never saw the original. I think I will see the remake and then the original, which is backwards I know, but so be it. 🙂
