I love to travel. One of the many things that I appreciate about traveling is the opportunity to try new foods. Basically, the whole world is my travel bucket list. When I read about popular dishes from certain areas it makes me want to travel even more. As such, I appreciate hearing about favorite foods from people that have traveled. Meg sent me a few of her favorite dishes that she sampled while traveling with me, which I am sharing with permission.
Five special dishes worth traveling for
From the rustic streets of Tuscany to bustling markets of Thailand, good food is reason enough to go on holiday. To give you a little inspiration, here are five global cuisines worth the air fare to travel to and try.
Khao soi, Thailand
Depending on where you go in Thailand, the cuisine can be vastly different. Chaing Mai in northern Thailand, is well known for hot, sweet dishes. One of the best ways to sample food in Chiang Mai, is to visit one of its many street food markets. At any of these, you will find some delicious Khao soi. Khao soi is a Thai noodle soup, made with boiled or fried egg noodles in a coconut curry broth with chicken or beef, served with lime, chilli, greens and shallots.
Gallo pinto, Costa Rica and Nicaragua
Costa Rican people place high importance on the family coming together at meal times and many of their native dishes reflect this. Gallo pinto is Costa Ricas national dish, and is usually served at breakfast. Rice and beans are cooked together until the moisture is completely soaked up, then served with fried eggs, friend plantain and grilled meat (usually pork), then scooped into tortillas. In some parts of Costa Rica, it is custom to pour sweet, sticky Salsa Lizano over the top.
Cosciotto di capretto arrosto, Italy
Best for its pizza and pasta, centuries of political and social change in Italy has meant that the country’s cuisine has absorbed influences from everywhere from Arabia to Germany. That being said, it doesn’t get more Italian than cosciotto di capretto arrosto, or roast leg of kid goat. Traditionally served at Easter, the meat is slow cooked for 2-3 hours at a high heat, bathed in red wine, garlic, rosemary and bay leaves.
Mole Poblano, Mexico
Mexican cuisine boasts some of the most crowd-pleasing dishes around and a visit to the country will do nothing but add to this reputation. Mole Poblano, is a thick, chocolately Mexican sauce which tastes deliciously different in every region. Oaxaca, in the south, is well known for its chocolate and spices, making it the quintessential place to try it. Pour it over BBQ chicken and serve with fluffy rice, speckled with fragrant coriander for an authentic flavour of Mexico.
India boasts an incredibly colourful cuisine, and is obviously known for its curries, as spices grow well in the very hot, dry climate. For the perfect, spicy mid-afternoon snack, Panipuri are small crisp hollow round breads filled with spiced water, tamarind, potato, onion, and chickpeas. They originated on the East Indian Subcontinent, but different regions have different names for the dishes such as Gol Gappe (in North India) and Patashi (in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.)
