My parents took us on a vacation to Louisiana in the very early 80s. I was too young to appreciate some of the local culture at that time, but one thing I did notice was how many of the restaurants there pride themselves on not only good cuisine but also a good atmosphere. I haven’t had the opportunity to return to Louisiana since then. I am pleased to see that new restaurants are choosing to locate there, and to see that they’re still looking to provide a good atmosphere.
The Spotted Horse Tavern And Dining Parlor is located at the Evangeline Downs Racetrack Casino Hotel, located in the Lafayette area of Louisiana. The restaurant gets its name from the urban legend describing a “long-necked spotted horse” winning a close race by just a neck. The legend, which actually refers to a giraffe, is one that is still referred to today. I have even heard it mentioned up here in New Jersey.
So what type of restaurant bears the name “The Spotted Horse”? One that strives to be unique and true to the region.
“The Spotted Horse is a dining experience unlike anything else in this region,” said Ted Bogich, Senior Vice President of Operations for Boyd Gaming, owner and operator of Evangeline Downs. “With modern takes on traditional Louisiana flavors, offered in a beautifully designed and whimsical setting, the Spotted Horse gives customers another great reason to visit Evangeline Downs.”
The restaurant contains a tavern on one side and a full-service restaurant on the other. Wanting to be as unique as its name, the restaurant offers a menu of nearly 20 hot sauces that diners can pair with their dishes. Just a few of the unique sounding flavors are ghost pepper and blueberry, habanero carrot curry, and serrano ginger lemongrass. The menu itself contains dishes that range from traditional Southern staples to funky new combinations.
