I am a member of the Restaurant.com #ReviewCrew. I received a gift certificate to help facilitate this post. I chose what restaurant to go to. Please note that, as always, any personal opinions reflected are my own and have not been influenced in any way.
Frig empty, nothing defroster, not in the mood for canned, I decide I needed to get out of the house and treat myself to brunch – nothing fancy since I am alone. Remembering RESTAURANT.COM, “Best Deal. Every Meal.”, I search their site for locations near my neighborhood and head for The Sandy Shack. It’s a little place down the road and across the Drum Point Marina, relatively new, opened six months ago.
Wow! This place reminds me of the delis of old – before the supermarkets, drive-thrus, and franchises squeezed mom & pop stores out. Prices are unbelievably reasonable (remembering this comes from a lady self described as frugal). Important: selections are many. More important: portions are generous. Most important: taste is delicious. This is no greasy spoon.
I contemplate seriously both breakfast and lunch selections, so many old faves of mind that it boggles my mind. Waffles, pancakes, french toast, omelets, eggs; tuna, chicken, egg salads, burgers (beef as well as turkey); both hot and cold sandwiches, wraps, clubs; fresh homemade salads, soups even chili. Perhaps hot pastrami…perhaps cheese steak…perhaps Jersey pork roll, then I make up my mind.
Karen at the counter knows how to serve people. But better than that she knows how to serve food. She calls out “One Belly Buster (two fried eggs, cheese, ham, sausage patty, bacon, and pork roll on a kaiser) with a side on onion rings,” to husband Gordon. Minutes later the he appears with my order. Hot off the burner the aroma of the cooked smoky meats and melting choose tells me that Belly Buster is real Jersey fare.
While noticing an ice machine, I mentally check LIKE. I select a lemonade-tea from the refrigerated water, soda, tea, juice, passing on available hot coffee, etc. No snacks – bagels, muffins, snacks, chips, pretzels, and fruit – this round. I head home.
Once on my back deck, I eat some Belly Buster. Now I know how it got its name. Too bad I cannot finish it. Too good to do anything else, I wrap up its leftovers…for a midnight refrigerator raid.
The next morning I feel like Old Mother Hubbard with her bare cupboard. Famished, I return to The Sandy Shack. Daughter Bailey is at the counter. She indulges my conversation then rings up my everything bagel and cole slaw. Then, since this place is To Go Only, I head home and enjoy.
