Ever heard of Veggetti? You may have seen a commercial for it on tv. Veggetti is a spiral vegetable cutter. It was designed to let you use vegetables to create spaghetti made out of your vegetables. Why might someone want to do that? Consider this fact, which was shared with me upon being introduced to Veggetti. Ordinary pasta has 800 calories and 160 grams of carbs compared to 60 calories and 8 grams of carbs using Veggetti®! Wow! That is a HUGE difference! This product would be ideal for anyone trying to eat healthier or avoid carbs.
After learning about Veggetti I wanted to try it, primarily because the idea of making homemade potato pasta was exceptionally appealing. We all love potatoes and my youngest is gluten-free, so potato pasta would be a wonderful alternative to traditional and gluten-free pasta. The unit is compact and easy to hold. There are a dozen stainless steel blades in the product.
Vegetables are ideal for use in Veggetti. Zucchini, squash, carrots, cucumbers and potatoes are just a few. Veggetti itself is pretty simple to use. It’s hand operated, meaning no batteries or eletric outlets required to make it work. You put the vegetable in one end and twist an end, just like an old-school pencil sharpener. Veggetti can cut in thin or thick pieces. There’s a safety cap that fits on either end that holds vegetables in place, because the blades really are sharp. Veggetti is dishwasher safe.
You’ll want to consider carefully which vegetables you use. To use Veggetti you put one end of your vegetable into the unit and then turn. If you pick a vegetable that’s too wide, too thin or oddly shaped you’re going to have to work a bit harder to peel that vegetable.
After we got as far as we could go peeling the potato we were left with large chunks that were just too difficult to peel. We wound up having to cut these to other shapes and sizes to peel them a bit further down. At no point were we able to completely do any one potato., it just isn’t possible. As far as those ends go, for most veggies they’d be great to use for snacking or dipping.
We got a nice sized amount of potato “spaghetti” after using about eight large white potatoes. After rinsing again I put it in a pot to boil.
As soon as I drained the water it was easy to see how much my potato spaghetti had shrank. I had put together a Quick Cheesy Bacon Ranch Sauce. The pasta was good but sadly just far too mushy for pasta.
I know Veggetti works, meaning it works to cut the vegetables into spirals. It would be terrific for people that want to make a fancy dish or salad with some pretty twisty veggies on top. After our experience trying to make potato pasta, I am also certain that you could make some yummy homemade hash browns using Veggetti. Hubby thinks it will be good to us if you’re steaming the veggies.
