I love bagels. One of the local bagel shops has a great sale every week, a dozen for $5.99. Sometimes I freeze them. Sometimes I think we’ll eat them all and then we don’t, leaving us with stale bagels. Recently I realized I could easily turn these stale bagels into homemade bagel chips.
The great thing about this recipe, aside from the fact that it’s really easy to make, is that you can change it up any way you like to suit your tastes. I made mine with some everything bagels and some egg bagels. You could use any type of bagel that you like. My favorite type of bagel chip is a flavorful one with lots of garlic. This isn’t the type of recipe where you measure, you just know how much to put on based on what you like. Once you’ve made them once you’ll be an old pro and know exactly how much of the seasonings to use to get the taste you want. Here’s how I made mine. It is ridiculously easy.
How To Make Your Own Homemade Bagel Chips
- 6 bagels
- olive oil (about 1/4 cup)
- sea salt
- garlic powder
Preheat the oven to 350 f.
Now you have to slice your bagels.
There’s no wrong way to cut the bagels, but the easiest way to slice the bagel is to first place the bagel on its side and cut it in half, leaving you with two “c” shapes. Then, place each “c” shape on its side and cut into thin slices with a serrated knife.
Place the bagel pieces onto a cookie sheet.
Brush the bagel pieces with olive oil. Make sure you cover one whole side, but don’t drench it. If a little extra drips onto the cookie sheet it’s ok, you can use one of the bagels you haven’t brushed yet to soak it up instead.
Sprinkle your seasonings generously over the bagels.
Bake the bagel pieces for 12 – 15 minutes. The finished bagel chips should be golden brown or a little darker. I prefer mine on the golden side, but then I like my toast lightly toasted. Your bagel chips should be firm and crunchy. If you like them on the lighter side bake for the 12 minutes and see where you’re at. If you want them darker put them back into the oven for another minute or two.If you like them really well done, bake for the 15 minutes, maybe even a little longer.
Remove from oven.
Serve as is or with a dip.
