I’ve made french toast for many, many years. It’s quick, simple to make and tasty. Recently I was going through my spices looking for cinnamon. I was having a hard time finding it and happened to be moving the apple pie spice aside at that moment. I knew the apple pie spice had cinnamon in it and figured it might be interesting to see how it turned out if I used that instead. The taste of the apple pie spice comes through nicely, but isn’t overpowering. Had I thought about it I might have put some warm sliced apples on top of it as well.
Here’s how I made it.
- 4 slices bread
- 1 egg
- ½ cup milk
- ½ tsp apple pie spice
- ½ tsp brown sugar
In a wide bowl (at least as wide as a slice of your bread), combine the egg, milk, apple pie spice and brown sugar. Apple pie spice already has cinnamon in it but if you really like cinnamon add ¼ tsp of that now also.
Dip each slice of bread into the liquid, turning it over so the whole thing is covered. Don’t soak it so the bread gets soggy, just make sure the whole thing is covered and a little damp.
Cook each slice in a frying pan (I use nonstick cooking spray on it), turning over frequently until golden brown.
Top with whipped cream (and syrup if you like) and serve immediately.
