I grew up in a world before most supermarkets and most fast food drive-ins. It was still an era of home cooked meals made from scratch in one’s own kitchen well before restaurants and delis became frequent dining fare.
Small mom and pop stores, bakery bread, fresh meat, fruit, vegetables were the best. I still remember its zesty, crunchy fresh cucumbers coming out of pickle barrel vinegar brine. Too bad that pickles in most places aren’t available that way any more.
Hubby and I were both under the weather July 4 which meant no family barbecue. So two weeks later when middle son ET drove here 400 miles to check on us, his older sister and his younger brother and their families came by. Meals were casual–leftovers, subs, pizza, Chinese–so we would all have time to prepare for a belated Independence Day get together on deck poolside.
Mixed grill of assorted meats, sausage, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, and fish complimented by fresh cole slaw, macaroni and potato salads, accompanied by roasted corn on the cob, lettuce, tomato, onion, topped off by brownies straight from the oven made an almost perfect bountiful spread until I realized I forgot the pickles. No cookout can be successful without them.
Luckily I had several jars of Farmer’s Garden by Vlasic Dill Chips in my pantry. Out came all–Bread & Butter Chips, Dill Chips, Kosher Dill Chips, and Zesty Garlic Chips best of all to me. Farmer’s Garden are gourmet cucumbers harvested peak season flavored with other veggies including crunchy carrots, red bell peppers, and fresh garlic cloves then packed in artisan-quality mason-style jars. Except for being sliced, their taste remind me of pickle barrel favorites of old, big, juicy, delicious.
Bottom line is we all ate, drank, and were merry. Before goodbyes, we complimented our men for manning the fire and ourselves for the things we made. Cleanup with no leftovers was easy for me. I ended the evening making a shopping list topped by Farmer’s Garden by Vlasic Dill Chips. They were so popular that I couldn’t keep their serving tray full. Young and old alike, every man, woman, and child without exception said they were the best they ever tasted. I must agree.
P. S. For a lunchtime treat, serve lettuce, tomato, and Farmer’s Garden by Vlasic Dill Chips along with your favorite cold cut or sandwich spread. It makes ordinary magically special.
