ABOUT EAT LOCAL
Maine has an abundance of fresh seasonal produce—all you need to know is what to do with it. But cooking with local fruits and vegetables can be an intimidating process, especially when you have a pound of kale staring you in the face and half an hour to get dinner on the table. Lisa Turner, of Laughing Stock Farm in Freeport, makes cooking and eating locally a whole lot easier with more than 125 recipes from her own kitchen, local farmers, home cooks, and Maine’s top chefs, including Sam Hayward, Abby Harmon, Jeff Landry, and more. Turner helps even the novice cook turn a farm-stand purchase into a quick, healthy meal. From what to do with loads of leafy greens to how to cook hakurei turnips to tips for growing your own tasty vegetables, this cookbook makes eating well all through the year.
I received a copy of The Eat Local Cookbook. Chapters include Why Eat Local, How To Eat Local, Gardening Basics, A Few Words To The Cook, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Basics, and Tips For Vegetable Storage. This book has a LOT of recipes. Each of the recipes includes the number of servings. I’d also like to have seen the I do have to admit, I found this cookbook a bit taxing. Rather than have a list of ingredients, the ingredients needed for each recipe are spread throughout the recipe. The cookbook has no photos, something I feel is necessary in a cookbook, and something I particularly missed in a cookbook that uses specific regional ingredients that I don’t usually work with. The prep and cooking times aren’t always clear either. If you’re looking for recipes for Maine fare, this is certainly a good place to start looking, if you’re willing to do a little work.
