With Hurricane Irene on her way up the coast now and expected to hit us here in New Jersey pretty hard this weekend, storm food shopping is on my mind. I myself have never really done any grocery shopping in preparation for a hurricane. I’ve done snowstorm shopping, but we don’t usually lose power during those. It’s a good possibility that we’ll lose power here if we get hit as bad as they’re forecasting. We always have bottled water in the house no matter what, we have four cases of bottled water. We have six boxes of juice pouches. I have bread, peanut butter and jelly. I have cold things like milk and cold cuts, but if we lose power for a long period of time chances are good much will go bad. I have cans of tuna, canned meals, and veggies. I have boxes of crackers and cookies and even a couple of Entenmann’s products, and I baked cookies yesterday. My 1 year old has been begging me to make my creamy chicken noodle soup, I have the ingredients and am going to make it tomorrow. We have a small propane stove from the camper, so we would be able to cook a few meals outside once the storm is over if power wasn’t back. Walmart was out of the little propane cans the stove takes yesterday but I got lucky and found some in Stop & Shop of all places today. I think I’m going to go up and grab a couple more this afternoon.
How do you prepare your food supply when a bad storm (hurricane, snow or whatever) is expected? Let’s hear it.
