Recently I was offered the chance to try new Ronzoni Smart Taste Pasta. I’m familiar with the Ronzoni brand and quality. Wondering why Smart Taste Pasta was called Smart Taste Pasta and if Smart Taste had a good taste, I agreed to try it out.
It’s important you understand that when we eat pasta in my house one of two things is happening.
1. We’re eating gluten-free pasta. My oldest son TJ is not happy about this because he doesn’t like the taste as much as regular pasta. When I can I try to make enough gluten-free pasta so that I can freeze some so that I can make regular pasta for my oldest.
2. We’re eating regular pasta because I made enough gluten-free pasta to put in the freezer so I’d have some to give the little guy. Now TJ is no longer unhappy. For regular pasta we usually get Ronzoni, because there are some great sales and I stock up.
I cooked a pound of Ronzoni Smart Taste Pasta. Cooking it was no different than cooking any other regular pasta. It didn’t look any different than any other regular pasta to me.
So how would it taste? On the first day I made this I had two test subjects – TJ and his girlfriend. TJ can be pretty picky about certain foods so I felt this would be a good test. I served the kids. TJ is usually a bit hesitant when he knows that I am serving something new that I am reviewing. He took one bite and chewed and said “This doesn’t taste different than regular spaghetti, what makes this different?”
He wouldn’t know that according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, less than 60 percent of children age three to five get enough calcium, or that the numbers decline as kids get older. He wouldn’t know that three out of four pre-school age children don’t get enough fiber. Knowing the why it was different probably wouldn’t impress him so I told him what was different.
Ronzoni Smart Taste is the first white pasta to be enriched with Fiber, Calcium and Vitamin D. It’s an excellent source of Fiber and contains Calcium and Vitamin D equal to an eight-ounce glass of milk. It’s lower in calories and fat than traditional pasta. He told me he never would have known it was made of anything different from the taste.
TJ was in an unusually good mood – actually, rather silly. Silly Bands are big around here. They are these bracelets that are also shapes of things. Somehow the spaghetti became Silly Spaghetti.

I felt really good giving my son something that was good for him. I felt even better knowing he’d eat it. I have some other photos of the kids eating the spaghetti in a rather unusual way that I’m saving for another post. You’ll want to check back for those.
