Best Baker in America
Best Baker in America puts one of the country’s favorite pastimes in the spotlight as eight skilled bakers bring their style and creativity to the table, transforming simple ideas into stunning and tasty treats. Over six weeks, the bakers are led through challenges that test both their technical ability and how well they can incorporate ingredients and flavors into their own baking vision. Food Network Star winner Jason Smith is joined by Marcela Valladolid on the judging panel along with host Adam Rapoport, eliminating one baker at a time until only the most skilled and thrilling baker remains.

Premiering Wednesday, October 4th at 10pm -“Meringue”

Seven bakers remain, and in this week’s Skills Challenge they are charged with making their choice of two different flavors of macaron. In the Master Challenge the bakers must conjure up their own highly creative take on the dessert classic – Baked Alaska – using torched meringue, cake and ice cream, with strawberry as the required featured flavor. One baker is not up to the challenge and is sent packing.

Premiering Wednesday, October 11th at 10pm -“Pastry”

Perfect mini fruit tarts using pâte sucrée (sweet pastry) is the challenge that six bakers face in this week’s Skills Challenge. For the Master Challenge, the bakers are given their hardest task yet: their original version of a St. Honoré cake that must contain the elements of puff pastry, pate a chou (cream puff dough), crème chiboust (a type of pastry cream), and a required featured flavor of coffee. One more baker is sent home after the challenge.

Premiering Wednesday, October 18th at 10pm -“Café Classics”

Five bakers are left in the competition and in their Skills Challenge this week they must tackle the temperamental and delicate café classic, Crème brûlée. For the Master Challenge, the task is to bake up their take on the complex and beautiful Opera Cake, a six-layer masterpiece said to evoke the tiers of the Paris Opera House. The required featured flavor is “noisette” or hazelnut. One baker is given their marching orders, as the remaining four are one step closer to the grand prize.

Premiering Wednesday, October 25th at 10pm – “Modern Classics”

In their last chance to get into the finale, the four remaining bakers must make Mini Mirror Glaze Cakes – perfectly mirrored on the outside and with an entremet (layered mousse) cake on the inside – in the Skills Challenge. In the Master Challenge, the bakers have to bake, plate and present a two-course dessert tasting menu, featuring chilies and fennel. One more baker’s dreams end today as they head home before the finale.

Online, meet the competitors and get the sweet highlights of each episode. Test your baking know-how with our quiz and pick up a few new tips! Tell us which treats are your favorite using #BestBakerinAmerica.

Premiering Tuesday, October 3rd at 10pm – “Spooked” – HALLOWEEN EPISODE!

Creepy surprises and freaky finds — the chefs are sure to be spooked by what they get in the baskets for Halloween! A special meat platter grabs the competitors’ attention at the start of round one, then a certain frightening ingredient is staring back at the chefs from the entrée basket. The two finalists get hyped up on Halloween candy as they scare up some creative desserts.
Host: Ted Allen Judges: Maneet Chauhan, Amanda Freitag, Geoffrey Zakarian

Premiering Thursday, October 19th at 9pm – “Feel the Burn”

In this heated competition, the chefs make the most of fiery, spicy ingredients in the baskets. In round one, a dip made with hot sauce and a spicy piece of poultry challenge the chefs. Then, the hot raw root in the entrée basket serves as proof that peppers aren’t the only way to spice up a dish. Finally, some spicy candy and a baby fruit occupy the competitors’ minds in the dessert round.
Host: Ted Allen Judges: Maneet Chauhan, Scott Conant, Amanda Freitag

Premiering Thursday, October 26th at 9pm – “Gimme Gator”

Strange incarnations of everyday ingredients, black garlic and coconut vinegar, challenge the chefs in the appetizer round. The judges go on the hunt for compelling flavor combinations in the chefs’ alligator entrees, then a Peruvian fruit is the most unusual find in the dessert basket.
Host: Ted Allen Judges: Scott Conant, Alex Guarnaschelli, Tiffani Faison

Chopped: Alton’s Challenge
Alton Brown joins host Ted Allen in the Chopped kitchen for Chopped: Alton’s Challenge! The food science mastermind influences the baskets for this epic, five-part tournament, putting 16 bold chefs to the test with puzzling challenges that tap into the science of cooking and the physics of food. The competitor that manages to outsmart and impress Alton and the judges will go home with a $50,000 prize.

Premiering Tuesday, October 10th at 10pm – “Alton’s Challenge, Part 1” – TOURNAMENT PREMIERE!

Alton Brown is taking over the Chopped kitchen for an epic five-part tournament! With $50,000 on the line, the first four chefs bravely take on his challenge. For this first battle, Alton demonstrates the mad science of champagne and the competitors embrace a fermentation theme. A strange, stringy Japanese specialty is the talk of the entrée round, then an unusual cake inspires some unusual choices in the dessert round.
Host: Ted Allen Judges: Alton Brown, Amanda Freitag, Alex Guarnaschelli

Premiering Tuesday, October 17th at 10pm – “Alton’s Challenge, Part 2”

The Challenge continues as four bold new chefs take on Alton Brown’s baskets on a quest for $50,000. To kick off round one, Alton demonstrates the science behind smoking foods, and the chefs are encouraged to infuse every dish with smoky flavor. Tiny radishes and a strangely savory cookie are in the mix for round one. Alton whips up a signature smoked item for the second basket, then an exotic drink is the smoky component in basket number three.
Host: Ted Allen Judges: Hugh Acheson, Alton Brown, Maneet Chauhan

Premiering Tuesday, October 24th at 10pm – “Alton’s Challenge, Part 3”

Dried and true! In this third Alton’s Challenge battle, there’s a dehydration theme for the baskets and Alton demonstrates a home hack that makes removing moisture from food a breeze. The first basket has the chefs making quick use of instant mashed potatoes. Then, an Alton specialty is one of the mandatory ingredients for the entrée round. In the dessert basket, diabolical ingredients have the chefs scrambling to make dehydrated eggs work in their final plates.
Host: Ted Allen Judges: Alton Brown, Amanda Freitag, Marcus Samuelsson

Premiering Tuesday, October 31st at 10pm – “Alton’s Challenge, Part 4”

Modern magic! Four new chefs explore the wonders of molecular gastronomy in Alton’s Challenge battle. Making a powder from a fat and clearing up the problem with transparent ravioli are some of the struggles in the appetizer basket. In the entrée round, the chefs get lamb cooked via a modernist method and some new age noodles. And a “cake” that looks like a drop of water — and tastes like one, too — gives the last pair of chefs a perplexing puzzle to solve for dessert.
Host: Ted Allen Judges: Alton Brown, Wylie Dufresne, Amanda Freitag

I am the oldest of four children. I am also a social media enthusiast, cat person, and Down syndrome advocate. I love coffee and milkshakes. My favorite dessert is cheesecake. I love rock music, tech, travel and food. And cheesecake. I HATE the misuse of the word retarded. I take it personally and find it very offensive. Did I mention that I love cheesecake?
