The family that eats together stays together! That’s what Lisa Caponigri believes, and she created Whatever Happened to Sunday Dinner? to give real families recipes they can easily cook and enjoy together. Caponigri has devised 52 delicious Italian menus–one for each Sunday of the year–that feature all the favorites, including classics like crostini, lasagne, polenta, stuffed peppers, veal piccata, risotto alla Milanese, and ricotta pie. There are also many surprises like Woodman’s pasta and Italian french fries–and traditional, treasured dishes from her own family’s kitchen, such as Nana’s Strufoli and Grandma Caponigri’s Ragu Sauce.

When she was a young girl, Lisa Caponigri regularly traveled on extended research trips to Italy with her father, an internationally known professor of Italian philosophy. Then, on school vacations Caponigri’s Sicilian grandmother invited her to spend time at her home, and under her grandmother’s watchful eye Lisa mastered Italian home cooking. Later in life, Lisa moved to Italy to raise her family and continued to study Italian cuisine. Lisa now resides in South Bend, Indiana and dedicates herself to spreading the gospel of Italian cooking in America.

I received a copy of Whatever Happened To Sunday Dinner?. Unlike a typical cookbook, this cookbook has no chapters. The cookbook consists of 52 suggested dinner menus. Of course there’s no rule that you can’t mix and match suggestions from each menu, so there are hundreds of possible combinations of dishes. I love that the beginning of the book contains an index of all meals and the dishes included in them. Each of the dishes are accompanied by a little info about the dish and easy to understand instructions. There are some very nice photos throughout the book, but not one for each dish or even each meal. I love food photos, they make me want to both eat and cook. I would have much preferred a photo of each complete meal, rather than photos of ingredients or one dish from a meal. Also, this book would be even more helpful if it contained cooking and prep time, things that are among the first that I consider when deciding what recipe I want to try. This book would make a great gift for anyone that isn’t sure of what courses to serve with what, or those who like to meal plan and want to add different dishes to their recipe collection.

ONE winner will receive a copy of Whatever Happened To Sunday Dinner?.
