ABOUT SPRINKLEBAKES

How can you make cakes, cookies, and candy even MORE fun? Award-winning blogger Heather Baird, a vibrant new voice in the culinary world, has the answer: Cook like an artist! Combining her awesome skills as a baker, confectioner, and painter, she has created a gorgeous, innovative cookbook, designed to unleash the creative side of every baker.

Heather sees dessert making as one of the few truly creative outlets for the home cook. So, instead of arranging recipes by dessert type (cookies, tarts, cakes, etc.), she has organized them by line, color, and sculpture. As a result, SprinkleBakes is at once a breathtakingly comprehensive dessert cookbook and an artist’s instructional that explains brush strokes, sculpture molds, color theory, and much more. With easy-to-follow instructions and beautiful step-by-step photographs, Heather shows how anyone can make her jaw-dropping creations, from Mehndi Hand Ginger Cookies to Snow Glass Apples to her seasonal masterpiece, a Duraflame®-inspired Yule Log.

Heather Baird is an accomplished painter and photographer whose works are in public and private collections across the United States, but her passion is creating eye-popping, mouthwatering desserts. She is a devoted practitioner of international confectionery technique who explores the outer limits of patisserie. She writes about her adventures in the world of creative dessert-making in her award-winning blog at sprinklebakes.com. Heather lives in Knoxville, TN, with her husband Mark and a mischievous pug named Biscuit.

MY THOUGHTS

I received a copy of SprinkleBakes. Chapters include

  • Getting Started
  • Blank Canvases
  • Line
  • Sculpture
  • Color
  • Mixed Media

Getting Started includes a good list of essential baking equipment and supplies, as well as descriptions. There are also explanations of commonly used terms and ingredients. Recipes within this cookbook contain not only photos of dishes and ingredients used to make them, but also techniques for some of the steps you have to take when preparing. There is a brief description of the recipe. I was familiar with many of the ingredients I saw in the recipes. Notably missing was cooking and prep time, but I can sort of understand that since this book is really a book on how to decorate more than it is a cookbook. The Blank Canvas chapter contains recipes of desserts that are popular and can be decorated in a variety of ways. The Line chapter contains instructions on how to make certain designs and templates, as well as some recipes. The Sculpture chapter provides techniques on how to turn dessert into 3D art. The Color chapter teaches you methods of creating and adding color to your creations. The Mixed Media chapter helps you learn how to combined things you’ve learned in other chapters in order to create more complex desserts. This cookbook would make a great addition to any collection. It would also make a great gift for anyone that’s interested in baking, or in turning ordinary looking desserts into beautiful ones.
