REVIEW – TruMoo 1% Lowfat Chocolate Milk

Trumoo Package

I love milk. I really love chocolate milk. I’m especially picky about my chocolate milk. Until last year I always made my own chocolate milk at home, unless I could find whole chocolate milk in the store. Then, I discovered Ultimate Chocolate Milk at BJ’s. It’s a 1% lowfat chocolate milk that tastes as good as some of the whole chocolate milks out there. It’s truly the best lowfat chocolate milk I’ve ever had. Naturally, when I was contacted about TruMoo Chocolate Milk, I was curious how it would taste so I accepted the offer to try it.

Dean Foods – known for its 35 regional dairy brands across the country – is launching TruMoo, a potential solution to the chocolate milk debate which meets the proposed USDA school nutrition guidelines. (Please see below for a list of Dean Foods’ family of brands now making TruMoo.)

With the introduction of TruMoo, more than 26 million pounds of sugars – or 40 billion calories – have been removed from milk served in schools and retail across the country. TruMoo is made with nutrient-rich white milk and contains no high fructose corn syrup or artificial growth hormones. In addition, TruMoo’s lowfat and fat-free varieties contain 15 to 20 percent less added sugar and 10 to 15 fewer calories than Dean Foods’ previous chocolate milk formula. Made with white milk, it still contains the nine essential nutrients growing kids need.

The Dean Foods family of brands making TruMoo locally with fresh white milk include:

  • Alta Dena®
  • Barber’s®
  • Berkeley Farms®
  • Broughton™
  • Brown’s Dairy®
  • Country Fresh®
  • Creamland™
  • Dean’s®
  • Gandy’s™
  • Garelick Farms®
  • Hygeia®
  • Jilbert™
  • Knudsen®
  • Lehigh Valley Dairy Farms®
  • Louis Trauth Dairy Inc.®

  • Meadow Gold®
  • Model Dairy®
  • Oak Farms®
  • Pet®
  • Price’s™

I received a gift pack containing several samples of TruMoo 1% Lowfat Chocolate Milk. The chocolate milk is delicious, and doesn’t really have that lowfat taste that so many lowfat chocolate milks seem to have. I liked it as much as the Ultimate Chocolate Milk that I’ve been buying for a year. That made sense when I took a closer look at the bottle and realized that it was made by the same company, and if I understand correctly is replacing the Ultimate Chocolate Milk that I’ve been buying because it contains less calories and less sugar. One 8 ounce serving contains 150 calories. Not only does TruMoo taste fantastic, but it’s made with real milk and contains calcium, protein, potassium, phosphorus, riboflavin and vitamins A, D and B12.

TruMoo is available in gallons, half gallons, quarts and single serve bottles, as well as in education themed containers in select schools across the country.

    1. Pat, I wish I could buy milk that is just pasteurized, also. I would not mind in the least having to shake it.

For those of you who don’t understand why we would prefer our milk un-homogenized: Homogenization is the process where milk is sprayed at a very high psi onto stainless steel. Whereby this process breaks the large fat molecules down so that the fat molecules will stay suspended in the milk. This is how we have milk that will not separate. This process makes the milk stay fresher longer, and hence, it has a longer shelf life.

  1. I have read that it is the low fat milks that are keeping us heavier, that whole milk helps fight belly fat. We have switched, but I don’t see too much of a difference in my belly fat. But I will tell you one thing, I have not gained any extra weight after switching to whole milk.

  2. I tried TruMoo and found it taste like water. almost no chocolate taste to it what so ever. It was by far the worst tasteing chocolate milk I have ever had and I have tried all types from the ones that ise whole milk to the ones that use 1% milk.

      1. tru moo is by far the worst i have ever had, no chocolat tast very watery its garbage!!!! Someone might like tru-moo only if they have never tried any chocolate milk before !!!!!

        1. Sorry to hear you didn’t like it. It’s not quite as full bodied as a whole chocolate milk, but for those wanting or needing to watch their diet it’s a great alternative. Thanks for visiting!

  3. Truemoo is the absolute worst chocalate milk ever. This is coming from someone who drinks chocalate milk religiously. If I have to choose betwen white milk and truemoo I pick white milk every time because truemoo has no taste. People like you are allowing Dean Food’s monopoly over chocalate milk to live on and dull our taste buds.

    1. Thanks for visiting. I respect your right to choose, however must point out that they are entirely different milks – whole milk is whole milk, Tru-Moo is 1% lowfat. There are people out there that think whole milk is gross too, although I am not one of them as I love whole milk.
