This past Wednesday I was invited to an exclusive McDonald’s preview event in New York City, for the unveiling of McDonald’s new Happy meal. Remembering when Happy Meals first came out in the late 70s and having spent many dollars on Happy Meals for my oldest son when he was younger, I was curious what they’d done to update it. Upon our arrival we were escorted to the upstairs, where we learned what was changing in the Happy Meal.
The new Happy Meal is available with a choice of a hamburger, a cheeseburger or a 4 piece Chicken McNuggets. The portion size of the french fries in the meal has been made smaller and has a value of 100 calories. There is a choice of beverages available – fat-free chocolate milk and 1% lowfat white milk. And last but certainly not least, a serving of sliced applies and dipping sauce is included with every Happy Meal. A toy is still included with every Happy Meal.
McDonald’s is updating the Happy Meal as a part of their commitment to offer improved nutrition choices. While there I had the opportunity to speak one on one with McDonald’s Senior Director of Nutrition Cindy Good. We discussed the move forward to a healthier kids meal, which I think is a good one. It’s a good decision to teach parents, and by extension children, the importance of eating healthier. I also got to speak one on one with nutritionist and author Keri Gans. We talked about the growing problem of obesity, and how important it is that we combat it.
McDonald’s is trying to offer healthier foods. Besides the new Happy meal, they’re also offering foods like oatmeal, salads and real fruit smoothies, in an effort to increase the intake of foods included in dietary guidelines from the USDA and the myplate.gov website. They’re also encouraging smarter food decisions, which includes being able to get the necessary information to make those decisions. There are a number of ways to find out the nutritional value of McDonald’s food including
2. mobile nutrition information (Yes, there’s an app for that.)
