Asia celebs get a place in your kitchen
From society pages to the home kitchen, A-list culinary duo share intimate family recipes
HONG KONG – For Southern homecooking, our queen is Paula Deen. For Italian, we look to Giada DeLaurentis. For Cajun it’s all Emeril, and for Southwest flavors, Bobby Flay reigns. But when it comes to Asian cuisine, who will confidently hold American consumers’ hands, and show them how to wrap spring rolls?
For all meals Asian, we turn to Hong Kong’s hottest culinary duo, Claudia Shaw—d’Auriol and Dominica Yang, two socialite gourmands introducing their most-loved Eastern family recipes to eager Western palates.
Good taste, high style and family tradition converge in Delicious (Haven Books, June 2010, 978-988-18094-4-5, $18.95), d’Auriol and Yang’s inviting, colorful cookbook. Offering no-fuss ideas for breakfast, brunch, dinner, picnics, afternoon teas and parties, this book is the result of two lifetimes of party-hosting.
D’Auriol, known as “the face of Chanel” in Asia, joins her best friend and fellow socialite Yang to capture the rich flavors and colors of East-meets-West cuisine. Full-color photographs and step-by-step instructions guide the amateur cook through beloved dishes such as:
Duck Breast with Soba
Roast Beef Fillet Stuffed with Foie Gras
Tapioca Brulee with Coconut, Mango and Pomelo
Sticky Toffee Pudding with Toffee Sauce
Originally an extension of their charity work, Delicious grew from a self-published project to benefit Room to Read (www.roomtoread.org), to a two-book deal with Haven Books (www.havenbooksonline.com), a top-tier English language press based in Hong Kong. Their second installment, Too Delicious, sold more than 2,200 copies in the first two weeks it released in Hong Kong, helping Room to Read build 21 new libraries in poor communities across Asia. Already a staple in many kitchens in Asia, Too Delicious releases stateside later this year.
D’Auriol, a graduate of Philadelphia’s Bryn Mawr College, has worked extensively in the fashion and luxury goods industry. She is currently the fashion buyer and style ambassador for Chanel. Hailed for her impeccable sense of style, d’Auriol’s refined and simple approach to fashion is also reflected in the way she cooks and entertains: with minimum fuss, but maximum flavor.
Yang also belongs to Hong Kong’s A-list. After her schooling in Hong Kong and England, she studied Russian Studies in London. She later pursued a career in photography in London before returning home on Hong Kong, and in 1996, she set up her own interior design company. Her dinner parties and recipes are greatly talked about amongst her friends, with a meticulous attention to detail, multi-cultural flavors, and the photographer’s eye for perfection. Her recipes reflect her lifestyle and the many influences from her travels.
Aside from their glittering social lives, both d’Auriol and Yang are moms who love spending time in the kitchen, and imbue family mealtime with a sense of passion and purpose. Proceeds from the sale of Delicious benefit Room to Read, a charity that provides books, schools, libraries and scholarships to children across the developing world. About the Authors of Delicious
Born in Hong Kong, CLAUDIA SHAW-d’AURIOL is the daughter of a Chinese father, an Austrian mother, and a taste-maker for Asia’s fashion scene.
A graduate of Bryn Mawr College near Philadelphia, Claudia has worked extensively in the fashion and luxury goods industry and is currently the fashion buyer and style ambassador for Chanel. Known for her impeccable style, Claudia’s refined and simple approach to fashion is also reflected in the way she cooks and entertains: fresh, uncluttered and elegant.
Despite her long-standing association with fashion, Claudia’s real passion is her family. A professional jet-setter, in her downtime she shares with her children Anna, Hugo and Thibault a love of food, travel, sport and the sea.
“For many women cooking is a chore. Fortunately for me, cooking has always been a joy, an adventure,” says Claudia. “In the confines of my own kitchen, each time I swirl butter into a pan and watch it foam, rub crushed garlic and rosemary onto a rack of lamb, each time I melt chocolate to start a cake, I begin a uniquely rewarding culinary journey that awakens the emotions, electrifies all the senses and evokes vivid memories.”
Considered one of Hong Kong’s most beautiful and best-dressed women, Claudia is now applying her talents to the family dinner table with Delicious, her first cookbook collaboration with Dominica Yang.
DOMINICA YANG is Hong Kong-born and bred. After her schooling in Hong Kong and England, she pursued Russian Studies in London, before returning to Hong Kong and working for four years in the garment business.
In 1996, Dominica set up her own interior design company, and now juggles her time between family, school, charity and work. Admired among her friends for her dedication to family, friends and work, Dominica’s simple recipes reflect her happy and fulfilling life.
“Cooking reflects the way we live,” says Dominica. “Our boys once said, ‘Food is life or death!’ Food is indeed a passion in our family; meal times are special times.”
Dominica and her husband Trevor live in Hong Kong and treasure family time with their three boys, Alastair, Charles and Dominic. Along with Claudia, Dominica co-wrote Delicious to share her beloved family meals with home cooks craving the warm, rich tastes of her Asian heritage.
