The New Wonder Bread, A Fun Snack Recipe And A Giveaway
By valmg on Sep 08, 2009 with Comments 73

Who hasn’t had Wonder Bread? I, like a million or two other people, remember eating this bread as a child. It was always soft and I’d roll the bread up into little balls. Or I’d make myself little sandwiches with a little butter and sugar. Wonder Bread’s been around a long time and the bread’s still the same soft fresh bread everyone loves. Recently they updated the ingredients of two of their breads to be more nutritious and offer calcium and Vitamin D. Here’s the information about the product update. Make sure to stick around for my thoughts on how it tastes and a great giveaway.
The Wonder® You Love Now Offers Even More of the Nutrition You Need – Wonder Classic and Wonder Classic Sandwich Provide Even More Calcium and Now Have Vitamin D. Two Slices Provide the Calcium of 8 Ounces of Milk and a Good Source of Vitamin D.
Irving, TX – Calcium is essential to keeping your families’ bodies healthy and strong, but getting enough from our diets is often difficult. Now, two of Wonder®’s most popular breads are helping families get the recommended daily allowance of calcium and vitamin D. Wonder Classic and Wonder Classic Sandwich breads now provide the same amount of calcium as eight ounces of milk in two slices and are good sources of vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium better.
While the benefits of consuming calcium are widely recognized with the nutrient ranking highest in importance by women according to a recent Gallup poll (March 2009), unfortunately, most Americans are not getting enough calcium from their diets. (NIH Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases ~ National Resource Center, January 2009). The recommended daily calcium intake for individuals between the ages of 4 and 8 is 800 milligrams (mg), between the ages of 9 and18 is 1,300 mg, and adults between 19 and 50 is 1,000 mg, according to the National Academy of Sciences.
“Balancing the food your family enjoys while providing the nutrition you want them to have can be difficult,” said Rich Seban, Chief Marketing Officer at Interstate Brands, bakers of Wonder products. “For more than 85 years, Wonder has been a staple in American households with a long history of identifying ways of enhancing the nutritional value of bread. Wonder’s added calcium and vitamin D offerings reinforce the brand’s continued focus on health as it continues to expand its menu of great tasting, healthy choices for the whole family. Giving your family the nutrition they need never tasted so good.”
Wonder has a long history of identifying ways of enhancing nutrition, in fact, it was among the first national bread brands to feature nutritional information on its packaging and in the 1940s, Wonder led the way as part of a government sponsored program to enrich bread with vitamins and minerals. Wonder was also one of the first brands to introduce a white bread made with whole grains – Wonder Made With Whole Grain White – a breakthrough product with the taste and texture of white bread that consumers have gravitated to.

We received a loaf of both the Wonder Classic White Sandwich and the Wonder Classic White. The breads were just as soft as they always have been and they didn’t taste any different. It’s important that kids have calcium and Vitamin D so I felt very good about giving this bread to TJ because it tastes good and was good for him. Wonder Bread also contains no trans fats, no saturated fats and no cholesterol. I made sandwiches and French Toast with it and was very pleased, everything came out as I expected.

The folks at Wonder Bread gave me a recipe that I could share with you. They call it a sandwich recipe but I think of it more as a toast cookie because they taste a lot like sugared toast. They were quick and easy to make. Instead of sprinkling the cinnamon and sugar I just mixed it in with the butter. We did use a little more sugar than the recipe called in the second batch for after tasting the first batch.
