The Supermarket Vegan: Meat-Free, Egg-Free, Dairy-Free Recipes for Real People in the Real World
by Donna Klein
- Perigee Trade Paperback Original
- January 5, 2010
- $18.95
Next month many of us will make a very popular and wise New Year resolution: to eat healthier. Just in time to help get people on the right track, this cookbook provides more than 225 original recipes that use simple ingredients and requires just a short trip to the local grocery store.
The health-conscious trend in society is gaining momentum as more turn towards improving their diet and lifestyle. Many tend to think that cooking vegan for a family is complicated and requires multiple trips to specialty stores. Klein disproves this belief as most of her recipes can be prepared well under an hour and burst with so much variety, color and flavor—you’ll never want to cook meat again!
Klein makes eating vegan uncomplicated and delicious, with recipes from appetizers to desserts, including:
• Butternut Squash and Roasted Red Pepper Soup
• Tuscan-Style Chickpea and Spinach Salad with Artichokes and Sun-Dried Tomatoes
• Grilled Portobello Mushroom Burgers with Black Bean Guacamole Sauce
• Quick Pasta Puttanesca
• Orange-Maple Mashed Sweet Potatoes
• Baked Beans and Macaroni Casserole with Crunchy Fried Onions
• Jamaican-Style Sweet Potato Casserole with Banana and Coconut
• Raspberry Pinwheels with Lemon Sorbet
• Pumpkin Studel
• Apple-Pumpkin Gratin
I received a copy of this book. The recipes are all in easy to understand English. The print is a good size. What I really like about the book is that each of the recipes also include suggestions for variations. What I’m not crazy about is the photos in the book- there are none.
This title will be released on January 5, 2010.

About the Author:

My son is dairy- and egg-allergic and I’m always searching for recipes that my husband and I can enjoy also. We like to have dinner as a family and I hate cooking two meals!! I really wish there was a great vegan mac’n'cheese or baked ziti recipe!
Having helped someone on a PKU diet, I know how hard it is to cut out all proteins. I wonder at no dairy, no fish, no meet, no fowl and if it is adequate for dietary needs.
I would love to prepare a yummy chocolate cake! thanks!
I would love to try a vegan pizza.

I’d love to win. We are hoping to go back to eating vegan at the first of the year. I’d love to make a REALLY GOOD version of chicken nuggets for my boys, and tacos!

I have yet to perfect a meatless burger. I’ve most recently made a black bean and rice burger, but am still trying to approximate the chipotle black bean burger that Gardenburger puts out — so good! Thank you for this giveaway!
I would like to find a good chili recipe.

I made a comment on Here and There, “One Man, Many Gloves”. I learned that my mom isn’t the only one that is always losing her gloves! lol
I am sure my family of boys would like:
• Baked Beans and Macaroni Casserole with Crunchy Fried Onions
They are actually tired of meat.
Eating healthy is very new to me.
I can use all the help I can get.
Thanks for having this giveaway.

I’d love to adapt a good chicken sandwich into a vegan dish.
Hi! I am a vegetarian, but am not getting enough protein in my diet. Also, I run out of dishes that taste good. I am trying to get the rest of my family interested in becoming more vegan like in their lifestyle. One thing I would like to find is a recipe for a great tasting vegan type burger.
Many thanks, Cindi

i am so excited about this book. i am allergic to dairy, and sensitive to soy – so finding cookbooks has been a challenge – but i love Donna Klein’s other books, too.
if i could have one thing in a Vegan version, it would be chocolate refrigerator cake.
I fix an excellent vegetable lasagna I just don’t know if I do it right, there is no meat in it. I would like to fix anything mexican in nature. That is what I love.
